Penny spreads a rumor that Bernadette is thinking of breaking up with Howard. Howard is unaware of the rumor, and plans to ask Bernadette to marry him. Upon hearing the false rumor that Bernadette is thinking of breaking up with Howard, Raj is excited, as he has his own crush on Bernadette. Bernadette cuts off Howard as he pulls out the ring to propose, in what appears to be a rejection, but she actually accepts his marriage proposal, much to Raj's dismay.
The false rumor about Bernadette breaking up with Howard motivates Amy and Sheldon to conduct an experiment in which they concurrently spread two false rumors: a juicy one (Amy and Sheldon had sex) and a mundane one (Amy decided to start a herb garden) to see which rumor gets back to them first. As expected, the juicy rumor reaches the entire group in under 24 hours while the mundane rumor never gets back to Amy and Sheldon. Later, Amy and Sheldon spread two more false rumors in the same manner as the first two: the mundane one being that Amy is getting orthotics, while the juicy one is that Amy is pregnant with Sheldon's child.
Physicist Brian Greene makes a cameo appearance at the beginning of this episode, featuring his book The Hidden Reality.
